The muscles in our face, particularly the ones around the eyes and forehead, cause creases in the overlying skin, especially when the brows are raised, or knitted together, or when smiling causes the creases at the outer corners of the eyes. Over time, the skin creases and become deeper wrinkles. These wrinkles then become permanent, even when the muscles are not moving. Botox can be injected into the specific muscles that cause the skin wrinkling to relax them. Once the muscles are relaxed, the overlying skin smooths out. If the creases and wrinkles are mild, Botox can temporarily erase the wrinkles almost completely. If the wrinkles are deeper, Botox cannot make them go away entirely, but it can significantly soften and improve the appearance of them. The effect of Botox is temporary and lasts, on average, 3 months. To maintain the effect, repeat treatments are necessary.
Xeomin is an injectable botulinum toxin produced by Merz Aethetics that was approved for use in the United States by the FDA in 2010. It has been approved for use in Europe since 2005. Like its more well known competitor, Botox, Xeomin is indicated for the cosmetic treatment of mild to moderate frown lines between the brows. The dosing and effects of Xeomin are very similar to Botox, and just like Botox it temporarily softens frown lines and wrinkles in the face and lasts approximately 3 months. Our patients and staff have had excellent results with Xeomin and we are excited to offer this new product to our Eye Plastics Northwest patients!
Juvederm is medical grade hyaluronic acid, which is the jelly-like substance found naturally in joints and is also found in healthy, youthful skin. Pure hyaluronic acid is so gentle that ophthalmologists have been injecting sodium hyaluronate into eyes for over 20 years to keep them inflated during cataract, and glaucoma surgeries. Juvederm can be injected into the skin with a very fine needle to plump up wrinkles, creases and depressed scars as well as lips, cheeks and brows to give a more youthful appearance to a patient’s face. The procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes and downtime is minimal. The results are immediate and can last between six months to one year. Some mild swelling may be noted after the procedure which typically resolves within a week. All injections at Eye Plastics Northwest are performed by Dr. McKevitt.
Belotero Balance is a hyaluronic acid cosmetic filler that was approved for use in the United States by the FDA in 2011. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of youthful skin. Like other hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm, Belotero Balance has a low incidence of allergic reaction, lasts six months or longer, and can be reversed/dissolved if necessary. Belotero Balance is used to smooth lines and wrinkles on the face, and works particularly well for fine lines around the eyes such as crows feet and vertical lip lines. Belotero Balance is injected with a fine needle and the procedure last approximately 30 minutes. The effects of Belotero Balance are seen immediately and downtime is minimal. Some mild swelling may be seen in the injection area after the procedure and typically resolves within a week. All injections performed at Eye Plastics Northwest are performed by Dr. McKevitt.
